    In late March of 1990, while I was working for the Archaeological department of Le Musee de Tahiti et des iles on the remote Island of Tubuai, where I had been a resident for a number of years, skeletal remains were accidentally discovered by my neighbour while digging a foundation trench. The following documents were the results of that discovery. At that time we had limited resources in Tubuai, the internet did not arrive until a decade later, even photography had limitations in as much as your photos would take weeks if not months to be developed, and this situation required swift action as the remains were found in the middle of house construction work. The following year on December the 12 a category 4 cyclone (Wasa) passed directly over the island...

... destroying the house on the beach where the excavated material as well as a multitude of artifacts were being stored. A large storm surge washed away every trace of the bones documented here.

    Every trace with the fortuitous exception of one single bone that was preserved in a safe place, now 33 years later I hope to find someone who can test this bone.
